Properties: Carbomer 980 has the ability to absorb and retain water, and can swell up to 1000 times its original volume when dispersed in water. Carbomer 980 polymer is a white powder, crosslinked polyacrylic acid that is polymerized in a toxicologically-preferred cosolvent system. It can enhance yield value and rheology of liquid substances, thus it is easy to get insoluble ingredients suspended at low dosage. It is widely used in O/W lotion and cream as favorable suspending agent.

Uses:

Typical use level 0.1-0.5% depending on the type of formulation desired viscosity.

Sprinkle Carbomer 980 on the top of the water and leave for 15 min until fully hydrated.

Mix and stir until completely dissolved.

Typical consistency is a runny gel.

Neutralize the carbomer to increase the pH. Neutralization can be done by slowly adding NaOH or KOH or triethanolamine (TEA). Make sure not to add too much and pass the peak level.

Increasing the pH to >6.0, gives a gel structure. By reaching pH 7 you will get a much thicker gel

Warning:  if you reach pH 7.5 gel will liquidity and become runny like water and you cannot reverse it back
