Tamanu oil is an entirely natural thick vegetable oil derived from the tree of tamanu. It is not edible, but it is used mainly for cosmetic and dermatological purposes. Particularly preferred are its healing properties. It is a true oil of the sun, since below a temperature of 25 ° C, it solidifies. Like all oils, it is not soluble in water, but can be diluted without worry in other vegetable oils.
Tamanu oil is distinguished by its healing and anti-inflammatory properties. Scientific tests have also demonstrated its antibacterial and regenerating properties. It is therefore understandable that this oil is particularly indicated for skin problems related to blood circulation.
Tamanu oil has been shown to exert anti-inflammatory activity. This activity is due in part to calophylollide 4-phenyl coumarin and a group of xanthones contained in the oil, it reduces the inflammatory reaction which accompanies all sort of skin lesions such as, rashes, wounds, insect bites, Acne pimples, etc. Applied locally, this oil is also traditionally used against sore throat.
Tamanu oil can help soften coarse beards when used in a beard treatment application. It also helps produce a fuller, more luxurious beard. It is great for treating hair loss, dry and damaged hair
Tamanu oil is extracted from the fruits of Calophyllum Inophyllum, a tropical tree also called “Tamanu” or “Ati” in Polynesia. This tree is deeply rooted in Tahitian culture, where it is considered to have many powers.
HOW IS IT MADE?
The fruits are first picked, then the nuts are extracted. They are then exposed to the sun to dry for 4 to 8 weeks. During this drying time, they lose about 1/3 of their initial weight and are gradually filled with oil. The oil is extracted from the almonds by the cold pressure technique and then filtered to remove all impurities. Natural tocopherol is finally added to stabilize the oil, thus obtaining the oil of Tamanu.
*It’s important to note that being on this list doesn’t promise that it will work for your skin type.* Our skin will decide which oil it likes the most and remember that skin takes two weeks to turn over so anything that pops up between week 1-2 was probably already going to happen.
Like other substances that are high in fat, carrier oils have a limited shelf life. Meaning that eventually they will go bad. It’s important to store oils in their original air-tight containers in a cool, dark place, such as the pantry, to maximize shelf life.
